American Medical Association publishes its findings that appropriate use of folic acid, beginning six weeks before conception and continuing four weeks after conception, reduces the incidence of NTDs by 73%. Beginning prenatal vitamins more than 30 days after conception seems to yield no benefit.
 
United States Centers for Disease Control recommends all women who have had a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect take 4000 mcg of folic acid daily.
 
United States Public Health Service recommends all women of child bearing age take 400 mcg of folic acid daily.
